Asper Biotech
is a young and dynamic Biotech firm based in Tartu, Estonia, specializing as a post-genomics company utilizing its genotyping platform for identifying genetic components of human disease and traits in all organisms, whose genetic sequence has been identified. Asper’s mission is to be a leading provider of custom genotyping services, instrumentation, software, bioinformatics, and reagents for customer in Research and Industry. “We are confident that the partnership with Resnova, thanks to its knowledge of the market and its diffuse sales organization, will contribute to consolidate our presence in Italy as part of our strategy of expansion within the EC market” says  Indrek Kask, CEO at Asper Biotech.

Resnova
is an Italian based distribution Company, with a complete territory coverage, specializing in Molecular Biology and Molecular Cytogentic products and services to Public and Private Research Institutions, Pharmaceuticals and Biotech industries and Clinical testing Laboratories, operating in Research and Advanced Diagnostic.

With the acquisition of Asper Biotech distribution, -comments Sergio Centanaro, Managing Director at RESNOVA S.r.l.,- Resnova completes the program of expanding to the forefront of innovative techniques its range of products and services for the Italian scientific Community, with widely affordable solutions, tailored to the local situation”.

11.2002 Asper’s scientist together with scientist in IARC, have published a new article in Clinical Chemistry about the reliability of APEX-based genotyping technology.

The publication “Reliable Detection of beeta-Thalassemia and G6PD Mutations by a DNA Microarray” (Gemignani F. et al.) was published in Clinical Chemistry 48, No 11 2002, 2051 –2054.

The scientists set up an assay for parallel one-shot detection of 17 beeta-thalassemia and G6PD mutations commonly found in Mediterranean population.

The results indicated very high levels of accuracy for the APEX (Arrayed Primer Extension) technology.

For example:
Specificity of APEX-based b-thalassemia test=TP/(TP+FN)= 99.4%*
Sensitivity of APEX-based b-thalassemia test=TN/(TN+FP)= 99.8%*

*TP - true positive     TN - true negative   FP - false positive   FN - false negative

The results, along with the low reagent costs and short processing time for the microarray, indicate a potential use of this technology for screening programs. This approach may be expanded to other common diseases, such as alpha-thalassemia, Wilson disease, or cystic fibrosis.

11.2002 Sunergia Medical and Estonia's Asper Biotech will jointly offer genotyping services and systems in North America.
